Elected Courses

The Elected Courses were the final stepping stones on the way to a Masters in Educational Technology.  All three courses were online, and each supported my efforts towards becoming a better educator.

White Paper:  Education is becoming more competitive.  Teachers around the world are questioning how to generate the next Einstein, Gershwin, and Cummings.  A mathematician, musician, and poet sent forth to grace society with brilliance.  However, why not strive for something greater?  A super student who has the ability to converge desired talents and abilities to gain a higher understanding.  Better yet, a classroom full of students who excel in all areas of the curriculum and embody intellectual abilities.  Geniuses. How do you make a genius? Course Module Work

Haiku CMS: Beginning the process of building an online course module was a daunting task at first.  I am a first grade teacher and my students are between the ages of 5 and 7 in the beginning of the year.  How is it possible to create and expect young students to use an online course?  My first choice was to make a wiki full of links from my school district’s account, but this seemed like the easy way out.  I knew I wanted something plain, but I also wanted it to look like an actual course.  I decided to try something new after finding out that Haiku could be stripped down to the essentials yet still offer possibilities.  (CEP 820)

Literacy Instruction

An Introduction to Reading: In learning about literacy instruction I was forced to reflect on past, current, and future "best practices" in reading instruction.  A case study was created on a student to analyze reading progress after pre-assessments, differentiated lessons, and direct instruction.  At the center of the case study was a student with improving letter sound association, but challenges with letter combinations and recognizing familiar patterns in words.  Theories, policies, and a lot of research are to credit for my growth in teaching literacy from beginning to end. Working with wonderful students and an amazing first grade team is a BONUS! (TE 846)
